Teen Shot, Killed In Hunting Accident by Grandfather with AK-47

W.T.F?! Why in the hell would you go hunting with an AK-47 assault rifle? That is not sport. That is not game. That is not honoring the spirit of the hunt. That is not stewardship of creation. What a waste...sigh.

LAVACA COUNTY, Texas -- A 14-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed in a hunting accident by his grandfather, investigators said.

According to the Lavaca County Sheriff's Office, Taylor Michalec's grandfather said he was walking behind the teen when the trigger on his AK-47 assault rifle snagged a branch and discharged, striking the teen in the back.

The shooting happened Wednesday afternoon near County Road 290, about five miles west of Moulton, Texas, about 100 miles east of San Antonio.

Both his father and grandfather tried to administer CPR, but when EMS responders arrived, the teen was pronounced dead. Michalec had just completed his freshman year at Steele High School, where he was a member of the football team.

Lavaca County investigators said they will not file any charges on the boy's grandfather because the shooting appeared to be an accident.

DUMB ASS

I don't think I am a "DUMB ASS" but I reserve the right to be wrong and I am humble enough to learn from the expertise of others.

You are indeed correct about being concerned for the well-being of the family. When I first read the article I shook my head in sorrow and sighed. My first thought was that of wasted potential, loss of a bright future, fractured family unity, and a deeply felt burden of guilt within the heart of the grandfather. That final "sigh" I penned reflected words, thoughts, and feelings that I left for the Spirit. I really cannot fathom what they are going through.

Peace to you...

The problem is not what gun the grandfather carried but why the gun isn't on safety.

That is a very good observation!

Nothing wrong with hunting wth the AK-47 as long as local laws are followed. It shoots the same round as an SKS and that rifle has bagged a lot of deer. In some parts of the country the 7.62X39 is actually a common deer round.
The problem is with the hunter in this case. Why wasn't the safety on?
Why was the gun pointed toward the boy?
In the military we carry loaded weapons constantly around others. But we are trained to have safetys on and muzzle control.
Poor training habits is the culprit here.

i think the whole concern with this thread is that people that have shoved their head up their butt are not aware that an AK-47 in the U.S. is not allowed for hunting if full auto fire is capable on that particular weapon... this gun was probabally a semi automatic only which is allowed, and thus not even close to overkill on an animal.......
